Camps & Excursions

Excursions and incursions are an integral part of our extra-curricular program. These are educationally based and socially beneficial. They are employed to enhance learning experiences and reinforce concepts taught in the classroom, providing opportunities to apply knowledge and understanding gained at school to ‘real life’ situations.

Camps play an important role in building group cohesiveness, in fostering friendships, and in strengthening the relationships between teachers and students. In addition, it gives individual students opportunities to develop independence and leadership skills. Year 7 camp, in particular, helps facilitate a smooth transition from primary school into secondary school.

All students have the opportunity to participate in camps appropriate to their age and interests during the year. All students are encouraged to attend.

Camps

Year 7 Camp – Campaspe Downs

The Year 7 camp runs early in Term 1.

An hour’s drive from Melbourne, Campaspe Downs is set amid 160 acres of stunning natural bushland in the Macedon Ranges, an adventure camp close to Kyneton and Hanging Rock.

The purpose of the year 7 camp is twofold. Firstly, it provides a unique opportunity for students to create friendships and memories with their new classmates in a non-classroom setting.

Secondly, we seek to build students’ resilience and independence by involving them in activities that challenge them and move them out of their comfort zone.

The adventure activities include Canoeing, Flying Fox, Giant Swing, Rock Climbing, Laser Tag, Leap of Faith, Raft Building, Initiative Exercises, Jacob’s Ladder, Archery, Challenge course and more!

Featured among Phillip Island Adventure Resort’s large choice of recreational facilities are professionally built and accredited adventure activities, including 3 giant swings, 2×2 high ropes courses and multiple twin flying foxes, as well as two large recreational lakes.

The Phillip Island Adventure Resort facilitates a positive community experience for students attending school camps. The programs on offer are fun-filled, affordable, educational and safe.

Year 9 – Rubicon: Adventure Camp

The Year 9 camp usually runs in Term 3 or 4. Rubicon is a residential Outdoor Education school operated by the DET located in the picturesque Rubicon Valley approximately 100km north-east of Melbourne.

Students attend for five days and will engage in a range of more advanced adventure activities including rock climbing, rogaining, hiking, mountain biking and white water rafting/canoeing.

Through developing integrated outdoor education experiences, we empower young people to develop the skills for positive growth. This learning fosters a deeper understanding of self and others, supported by the skills to contribute to a positive community and sustainable environment.

Year 9 students are also introduced to a sleeping under canvas during an overnight expedition.

Performing Arts

At Glen Eira College students participate in a range of musical and performance opportunities that provide them with a variety of skills that contribute to their overall personal development. The benefits to students are evident in the energetic and confident students here at our college. By engaging in the arts our students nurture the development of cognitive, social and personal competencies.

Instrumental Music Program

The Instrumental Music Program at Glen Eira College provides students a choice of the following instruments:

  • Woodwind – saxophone, clarinet, flute
  • Percussion & drumkit
  • Guitar – acoustic and electric
  • Bass Guitar
  • Piano
  • Voice
  • Strings – violin, viola & cello

All instrumental students participate in ensembles that rehearse at lunchtime or after school. Being part of a musical ensemble develops student’s time management, organisational skills, perseverance, coordination, responsibility, concentration and team skills. Students also improve their listening and social skills performing in these groups.

Ensembles at Glen Eira College include:

  • Woodwind and Percussion Ensemble – Monday morning
  • Guitar Ensemble – Monday lunchtime
  • Vocal ensemble – Thursday lunchtime

The GEC Wind Ensemble Band which rehearses every Monday morning is comprised of flutes, clarinets, saxophones, keyboards and bass guitar. The Year levels involved range from Year 7 to Year 11. The music is from movie themes and popular melodies. The ensemble is under the direction of Ms Hunt with Mr. Voogd leading the drum kit and percussion section.

Performance opportunities

Many performance opportunities are created for students each year. Last year students have again joined with other regional schools for the annual Singfest singing in four part harmony and Stringfest. Students sang in the Mass Choir for the Victorian Schools Spectacular at Hisense Arena and for the first time we also had students in the technical team playing important roles in putting the wonderful together.

Opportunities abound for students to learn a new sport and to make friends and connect with others beyond their class.

Glen Eira College students participate in various sporting activities. These activities allow students to challenge themselves in a fun and motivating way.

Student Voice & the SRC

Our students actively contribute to decision making and collectively influencing outcomes by putting forward their views, concerns and ideas.

Glen Eira College- Student Representative Council (SRC)

The Student Representative Council (SRC) is the voice of GEC — we listen, work with, and assist our fellow students and teachers to make our school a better place for everyone. It is a learning experience for the students involved — they learn the inner workings of the school, how decisions are made, and how to achieve meaningful change.

The SRC provides students with the leadership opportunities they need to flourish and to feel they have a voice. The SRC is an active member of the school community, negotiating with school leaders to make a difference. When you’re looking at an SRC student, what you’ll see is organisation and teamwork at its finest.

Issues likely to be discussed at SRC meetings are:

  • Problems, concerns and opportunities that students have/want and which need to be discussed by the School Council. (An example of this is the discussion of fundraising events such as Cultural Diversity Week and International Women’s Day).
  • Letters and requests from various organisations.
  • Any fundraising that is seen as important to the school.
  • Organising and running leadership workshops

Any student interested in joining the SRC must attend regular meetings and abide by the established rules. SRC involvement presents an incredibly rewarding experience, as students have the power to present ideas that become a reality.

Anyone can join the SRC, and we believe that everyone can make a difference.
