Principal’s Welcome
Welcome to Glen Eira College!
My name is Jane Thornton, and I am the very proud Principal of Glen Eira College. Whether you are a prospective student or a parent exploring options for Year 7, I am delighted you are considering joining our vibrant school community – a place where new opportunities, friendships, and discoveries await.
At Glen Eira College, we are committed to providing a safe, supportive, and stimulating environment where every student is empowered to learn, grow, and connect. My vision is to ensure both academic excellence and equity for all. We take a holistic and strategic approach, empowering every student to reach their full potential, regardless of background or circumstance.
To achieve our vision, we:
- Empower our teachers and leaders through ongoing professional development and targeted learning opportunities, ensuring they have the expertise and resources to support diverse learners.
- Adopt evidence-based and inclusive teaching practices, such as the Universal Design for Learning framework, to make learning accessible and engaging for all.
- Use data to identify and address individual student needs, personalising learning and providing targeted support, wellbeing initiatives, and enrichment opportunities.
- Foster a culture of high expectations and care, where every student is challenged to achieve their best and supported to overcome obstacles.
- Promote strong partnerships with families and the wider community, recognising that collaboration is essential for student success and wellbeing.
- Ensure resources are distributed fairly and based on student needs, so every learner has access to the opportunities and support they require to excel.
Excellence cannot be achieved without equity.
By focusing on both, we create a school where every student is equipped to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally, and is prepared to contribute confidently to their community and beyond.
As a co-educational public secondary school, Glen Eira College offers a comprehensive curriculum that prepares students for the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE), with a strong record of academic success – our median VCE score has consistently been 31, and 19% of our students achieved an ATAR above 90 last year. We also offer enrichment programs such as the Select Entry Accelerated Learning (SEAL) program for Years 7 to 9, and a unique languages program including French, Japanese, and Hebrew, with immersion and first language options.
We foster leadership, creativity, and resilience through a wide range of opportunities – from student leadership programs and camps to cultural events and sports. Our facilities are modern and continually improving, including a new three-storey building and outstanding sports facilities, all designed to support diverse interests and talents.
At Glen Eira College, we value our partnership with parents and carers, encouraging active involvement in your child’s learning journey. As a medium-sized school, we know each student as an individual and tailor their learning accordingly, creating a community where students feel safe, supported, and motivated to achieve their personal and academic goals.
Choosing a secondary school is an important decision. I invite you to explore all that Glen Eira College offers. We are proud of our inclusive, dynamic community where every student has every opportunity to succeed and every reason to celebrate.
Thank you for considering Glen Eira College. We look forward to welcoming you and your child to our school community.
